Workshop inspected by feathered friend
Animals are a part of many workshops, including woodwork. A friendly robin is a regular visitor to Woodwork. This week he was in to inspect the new pole lathes.
Workshop leader Ciaran has been busy with his team constructing not one but two traditional pole lathes.
Manually powered pole lathes are an ancient technology. The pole lathe allow tools such as chisels to be used on a turning piece of wood. The power is provided by a foot pedal, that pulls on a spring-attached cord.
The larger pole lathe is currently situated outside the workshop. It uses a long branch to provide the spring. This mechanism is ancient.
The indoor pole lathe has a modern twist, with the spring being provided by a length of bungee cord.
