Gauging fitness for inclusion

We currently have three walking groups at Corbenic. The easiest group is the Ramblers. A step up from Ramblers is the Adventurers. And finally, do not be fooled by the name of the Hillwalkers… they do more than hills.

The three groups tackle different terrains and move at different speeds. Therefore aerobic and cardiovascular fitness are as important as balance and ability to manage difficult terrain.

To find out which group might suit you, try our benchmark test – walking the first section of the Corbenic Poetry Path. Just time yourself over the section shown in the map from the bottom Poetry Path Car Park to the top of the Larch Wood. This will let you gauge whether you are a Rambler, an Adventurer or a Hillwalker!

The Ramblers – regular attendees of this group will walk the benchmark route in about 15 minutes. Some of the group are slower, so do not be disheartened.

The Adventurers – the expectation for joining this group is being able to walk the benchmark route in about 12.5 minutes or less. There is also an expectation to manage more demanding terrain. You should be able to carry on and complete the full Poetry Path without assistance.

The Hillwalkers – to be comfortable joining our hillwalkers you really need to be walking the benchmark route in 10 minutes or less. In addition you will expected to ascend steeper gradients, pathless terrain, stream crossings and some entry level, short scramble sections.
