Memories Behind The Rhododendron

Rhododendron flowers are beautiful and this was why these plants were introduced from the highlands of Asia to estates across Scotland. The name means "rose tree" and it is a member of the ericacea (heath) family. Though beautiful, rhododendron spread rapidly in the Scottish climate, smothering other plants. Being non-native, no animals graze the leaves. The dense leaves also shade out any competition plants.
On the path between Drumour Lodge and the Village Green, a red-leaved tree was being swamped by the rhododendron. Initially thought to be acer, closer inspection suggests it is a member of the Prunus genus. In response to a request to see if this could be unchoked, a piece of Corbenic history was revealed.
Hidden behind the thick curtain of green was a throne carved from a tree stump. The pictures above show the reveal.
Enquiries so far indicate that it is at least 18 years old, probably the work of former Estate Workshop Leader, Justin. As ever, the residents are the best source of information. One resident recalls Corbenic's first resident, Win Saw, sitting there, when he lived in Mullach. This feels appropriate as the memorial garden for Win is nearby.
